Team for Individualizing Pharmacotherapy in Primary Care for Seniors

The Team for Individualizing Pharmacotherapy in Primary Care for Seniors (TIPPS) is a 5-year (2002-2007) program funded by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR). TIPPS brings together researchers with diverse backgrounds to focus on medication use by seniors in primary care from a multidisciplinary, collaborative perspective.

The overriding principle of TIPPS is to explore practical solutions that explicitly recognize the uniqueness of individual patients, while taking into account the experience of the provider and the broader characteristics of the health care system.

TIPPS research projects focus on:

  • Improving the use of therapeutic information
  • Decision-making
  • Enhancing appropriate prescribing
  • The effect of multiple medications on an individual's benefit or risk profile
  • Improving adherence

To date, 61 studies enabled by or related to TIPPS have successfully attained peer-reviewed funding ($26,593,234), 15 studies have been internally funded ($56,568), 6 studies have been conducted without formal funding, and 11 systematic reviews have been completed. TIPPS research has been disseminated as 198 academic posters or presentations.  TIPPS research has also been represented in 75 publications (including abstracts).
