Program for Assessment of Technology in Health
The Program for Assessment of Technology in Health (PATH) is a research program in economic evaluation and health technology assessment (HTA) that primarily supports government reimbursement decisions in the province of Ontario. PATH constitutes a new research program in economic evaluation and HTA associated with the Centre for Evaluation of Medicines (CEM) at St Joseph's Hospital and the Department of Clinical Epidemiology & Biostatistics (CE&B), Faculty of Health Sciences, McMaster University.
PATH was established by the late Dr. Bernie O'Brien, Ron Goeree and a team of researchers in 2003.
Path's mission is to improve population health by conducting and promoting evidence-based evaluations of the effectiveness and efficiency of new and existing health care technologies.
In pursuit of this mission, the people of PATH:
- Synthesize information about the effectiveness and efficiency of health care technologies
- Conduct original research into the costs, effects, benefits and utilities, of health care technologies, using advanced decision analysis and modeling techniques, with a focus on the analysis of uncertainty
- Develop new methods for health technology assessment
- Design and carry out special "field evaluations" to fill gaps in important information about health care technologies and their diffusion
- Provide advice and consultation to clinical, managerial and public policy decision-makers about the funding and utilization of health care technologies
- Disseminate knowledge about health technology assessments
- Teach undergraduate, graduate, post-graduate and post-professional students methods for health technology assessment
- Develop and conduct leading-edge courses and workshops for evaluation of health care technologies
